Protonix/Pantaloc is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Protonix works by blocking acid production in the stomach. It may be used in combination with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) to treat certain types of ulcers. Protonix may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.Pantoprazole is also useful in conditions that produce too much stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Protonix can take several days of therapy with pantoprazole before your stomach pains improve. Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your condition does not improve, or if it gets worse. You can take antacids for the occasional relief of stomach pain unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you otherwise.
